FedEx Delivers With Unparalleled Global Network

It’s been a good year for FedEx, marking its 45th year in operation. Total revenue hit $65.5 billion as the company models strategic flexibility in a world of global market evolution.

With 425,000+ team members, FedEx ships 14 million packages daily via 670 aircraft and 180,000 motorized vehicles through 5,000 hubs and facilities.

A daunting task, as consumer expectations for service grow steadily, the company has managed significant growth in earnings over the past two years due to expansion in the global freight market.

“It was a year of opportunities and challenges — anticipated and unexpected — and FedEx emerged more competitive than ever,” Chairman and CEO Frederick W. Smith said in letter to shareholders  “In all my years at FedEx, I have never been so optimistic, so sure of our strategy and our ability to deliver an exciting future.”

Pillars of the brand’s competitive advantage include its unparalleled global network; its eye for innovation and agility, and its appreciation of customers’ trust.

FedEx and other package-delivery companies have benefited from online shopping that surged 17% last year, as consumers increasingly expect goods shipped directly to their homes.

FedEx has invested heavily by automating operations and benefitted from the rebound in industrial freight. “Our dense, ubiquitous networks create fundamental scale and scope advantages that aren’t easily replicated,” added Smith. “Nearly every business and person on the planet can order an item online and have it affordably transported and delivered door to door by FedEx across borders within one or two business days, customs cleared. For e-commerce to continue to grow rapidly, our efficient and reliable global transportation solutions are vital.”

Hub expansion and technology investments make FedEx Ground the most highly automated ground network in North America, , with over 130 automated facilities, and innovations like self-driving tuggers programmed to transport the bulkiest items.

Packed with laser-based sensors, cameras, and navigation tools, tuggers can “see” their working environment, spot obstacles, and navigate around them or seek alternate routes.

Aircraft fleet modernization includes a Boeing 777F built for FedEx Express that is their first plane to fly 100% on biofuel and for smaller markets, on order, are 50 newly designed Cessna SkyCourier C-408 twin turboprops.

During FY18, the company launched pilot-development plan, Purple Runway, to address the anticipated shortage of aviators in coming years.

FedEx and its feeder operators at Mountain Air Cargo and Empire Airlines are partnering to promote student interest in aviation careers at selected colleges and universities starting with Delta State University.

Purple Runway has three main objectives: to further career development of pilots during their employment with the feeder; to assist the feeder operator in its efforts to recruit high-quality, well-trained candidates; and to provide FedEx Express with an early opportunity to evaluate feeder pilots as potential applicants for available FedEx Express trunk positions.

With an eye towards recruiting millennials, FedEx was named one of the 2018 Best Workplaces for Millennials by Fortune Magazine; a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation; and acknowledged as one of the Best Companies for Diversity by both Fortune and Black Enterprise.

Poised at the nexus of virtual and physical networks, FedEx joined the Blockchain in Transportation Alliance (BiTA) to explore applications in the logistics sector. Blockchain has potential to lower transaction costs while accelerating system processes and freeing up working capital.
